For their first release since 2022’s Forward Thinker on Acid Jazz Records – a former Jazz FM Album Of The Week – the innovative Nimbus Sextet have returned with a polyrhythmic slice of dancefloor driven jazz inspired by the modal jazz giants of the 1960s.

As with releases from the seminal jazz label that inspired its name, 'Impulsive' comes complete with three versions, including both mono and stereo single versions and a full version featuring rising Scottish saxophonist Norman Willmore.

Bandleader and pianist Joe Nichols took his cues from the classic boundary pushing grooves of McCoy Tyner and the John Coltrane Quartet, introducing new dimensions to Nimbus’ distinctive sound and driving a locked in group of new personnel to a higher plane whilst still
maintaining the infectious rhythms well known to fans of the band’s Acid Jazz releases.

Impulsive rounds out the sound of the sextet with a heavy percussive groove and a punched-up, four-part brass section. Production from Nuovi Fratelli at Dystopia Studios in Glasgow eschewed digital sounds in favour of a warm organic Quincy Jones’ influenced feel, complemented by a slice of delicious double bass from Stephen Jack.

A crowd favourite in the band’s live sets across the country, Impulsive is enjoying particular success internationally with over 75K+ streams, thanks to being added to three major Apple Music jazz playlists; Pure Jazz, Jazz Currents and Jazz Scene UK.
